The Ponca City Ambucs are getting two handicapped cabins built for Camp McFadden.

Ponca City OK (Oct. 16, 2006) -  Groundbreaking for the AMBUC handicapped accessible cabins was held Friday, Oct. 13 at Camp McFadden on the west shore of Kaw Lake in northcentral Oklahoma.

Funded in part by the AMBUCS with the help of the Northern Oklahoma Development Authority (NODA), the cabins will include two bedrooms with bathroom facilities in the middle.  The cabins will be constructed by afternoon students of the Pioneer Tech Construction Technology program under the direction of instructor Alan Stolhand.

“The AMBUCS  have worked with NODA and the camp to make these cabins a reality,” said project chairman John Sutton, a member of AMBUCS and the Camp McFadden Inc. board.  NODA will donate $14,000 to the AMBUCS on a reimbursement method once construction has begun said Larry Tipps, NODA executive director.  “It’s a pretty camp with a lot of potential,” said Tipps.

Representing AMBUCS at the groundbreaking were Sutton and Kay County Commissioner District Two and AMBUC Wayne Leven.  Tipps and Alicia Hibbets, NODA grant administrator, also attended the groundbreaking at Camp McFadden.

Foundation for the cabin is being dug and Hembree and Hodgson Construction.are donating the labor to place and finish the concrete floor slab with help from Midco Concrete. Wells Plumbing is assisting with plumbing and Younger-Holmes with the electric.

“Once they’re complete the cabins will have heat and air and be available to rent 365 days a year,” said Sutton.

“We anticipate the foundation will be dug and formed prior to Thanksgiving and then the plumbing can be installed” said Stolhand.

Upon completion the cabins will be for rent through Camp McFadden Inc. both to handicapped and non-handicapped individuals.  Plans are to eventually build a second one at the camp.
